I think LinkedIn is a pretty useful tool. LinkedIn basically links professionals to other professionals and keeps you connected with minimal effort. There’s a cool feature in LinkedIn that helps you learn a ton about yourself.
You already know that I’m a big proponent of keeping things simple. It’s pretty easy for me to describe companies and products in a very simple way. But, when it comes to describing ME, it gets really, really tough. I don’t think I’m alone in this regard. We have a tendency to view ourselves in very complex ways. Oftentimes, how other people perceive you is equally as important as how you know, or view, yourself. And, at the very least, it’s useful to know what others think.
LinkedIn has this powerful feature called “recommendations.” You can ask others in your personal network to write a recommendation about you. You’ll be surprised at how this little feature can say so much about who you are – from their point of view. Try it out. You can always choose not to make the recommendations visible in your profile. You can also delete them.
These LinkedIn recommendations taught me that I’m not as complex or hard to figure out as I would like to think. If enough people write recommendations about you, a few consistent themes will start to emerge. In the end, you’ll figure out that others know you a lot better than you think … and, that’s pretty cool.
